Did you know that UV lights destroy microorganisms? UV radiation is naturally present in sunlight, and its ability to break down cells is the reason that many of us get sunburned. However, while our bodies regenerate from this damage, microorganisms and germs are less fortunate.

The damage that UV lights do to microorganisms’ DNA structures is so severe that they can’t regenerate or reproduce. While they’re still technically present in the air, they are rendered completely harmless. Sunlight’s UV content is the earth’s front line of defense against the spread of disease.

UV lights can have the same effect in your home. It’s not easy to keep germs and microorganisms out of your indoor air. If the air leaks in your home are sealed, this could effectively “bottle up” the contaminants present in your indoor air, creating a high concentration of germs. The humidity around Tampa Bay doesn’t help, either, because mold and microorganisms love moisture.

Dehumidification systems can remove the moisture from your indoor air, creating a less hospitable environment for germs, but they can’t actually sterilize your air. UV lights have been proven to destroy:

One area particularly susceptible to mold growth is inside your air-conditioning equipment itself. As warm, humid air passes over cooling coils, condensation is created. This condensation is the moisture from your indoor air, which then drips into a collection tank. This is how your air conditioner removes a certain amount of indoor humidity as a byproduct of the cooling process. However, all that moisture creates the perfect breeding ground for mold, which can then be distributed through your home as conditioned air moves through your ductwork. UV lights installed in your HVAC system can protect your entire home, because they sterilize all the air that passes through your system.

Purifying your air may help improve health problems caused by the constant presence of microorganisms, such as:
