noisy air conditioner

In the sweltering heat of summer, the air conditioner is a savior. For this reason, when it turns on, and something does not sound right, it can cause a lot of worries. An air conditioner problem is not something that can be put off. Some problems are easy to fix yourself, while some may require an engineer. Below, we go through the sounds you may hear from a noisy air conditioner and discuss possible problems and fixes.

Clicking

A clicking sound that increases as your fan speeds up is a sign that something is obstructing the fan itself. It could be a small part or debris or detritus that has been sucked in. To solve this, remove the cover and clean the fan thoroughly.

Squealing

A high pitched squealing from inside the unit can indicate that the belt connecting the fan and motor are worn down. This sound may increase or decrease as the fan expands and contracts. It will not cause damage to the unit if you continue to run it, but it is a sign the fan will break soon, and you need to call an engineer quickly.

Buzzing

Buzzing noises very often indicate that you have an electrical problem. You may hear this coming from internal or external units.

Commons problems include loose wiring, failing motors, or broken compressors and capacitors. For electrical problems, always call a qualified engineer

Banging and Knocking

If you hear a banging or kicking coming from the outdoor unit, you should cease using the unit immediately. It is probable that something is stuck in the fan. This could be garden waste or general rubbish from the local environment.

It could also signify a bigger problem, where the fan has come loose from its mount. This will cause it to hit the internal casing. In this case, call a professional immediately.

Hissing

Hissing can be a number of problems. The most likely is a refrigerant leak. This happens when the lines and coils carrying the refrigerant gas leak, creating a high-pressure hiss.

The problem could also be related to faulty valves or an air filter that does not fit into its slot. This is not generally fixable unless you are a trained professional

Noisy Air Conditioner Bubbling

Bubbling and gurgling can also be a sign of a refrigerant leak. In this case, it is just escaping in a different way, making it bubble instead of hiss.

Deeper gurgling sounds are likely to be caused by the condensate drain line. Check it is not blocked, and condensation is escaping. Double-check your condensation trap is not full.

Metallic Screeching

If you hear a metallic grinding or screeching once your unit turns on, you have a problem with bearings. These are the bearings in the motor. They will need replacing along with your whole fan motor.
