In Florida, we think a lot about air conditioning. But what about air purifiers? Surprisingly, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the air inside the average home is up to five times as polluted as outside air.
It seems ridiculous. You’d think the air quality inside our homes would be a haven from the suspect air of the outdoors, but you’d be wrong. For one thing, many building materials create “off-gassing” long after construction. Insulation, glues from particleboard and plywood, carpet, paints and vinyl products all release VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) into our homes.
The other reason our indoor air quality is so bad is that we don’t actually filter it. The inline filters we change every month or so are meant to protect the machinery at the heart of a home’s HVAC system. These filters do clean the air to an extent, but only trap large particles.
A “better” filter isn’t the answer, because installing a filter efficient enough to trap micron-sized particles would place a terrible drag on the HVAC. Imagine using your mouth to pull air through a paper towel, and then imagine trying to do the same thing with a folded towel from the laundry.
